Kafka’nın Die Verwandlung Adlı Öyküsünün Ara Dilden Çeviri Bağlamında Değerlendirilmesi

Focusing on Franz Kafka’s Die Verwandlung, this study addresses a long- neglected issue in translation studies: indirect (relay) translation. Derya Yılmaz examines the multi-layered transfer of the text from German into English and subsequently into Turkish, revealing how translational deci- sions shape meaning, structure, and aesthetic qualities. Grounded in Descriptive Translation Studies, the analysis draws particularly on Gideon Toury’s concept of norms and Eugene Nida’s notion of equivalent effect, providing a strong theoretical framework. Through detailed comparisons, the study highlights additions, omissions, and linguistic transformations, demonstrating that the intermediary language functions not merely as a bridge but as an active agent of transformation. By combining theoretical insight with concrete textual analysis, this work offers a significant contri- bution both to Kafka studies and to broader discussions in translation theory, especially regarding the complexities and implications of indirect translation practices.
